Heartbreak & Heroes
Lebanon Emergency Relief
We are appealing to our wonderful community to support our Beirut Heartbreak and Heroes Appeal.
One of the oldest most beautiful cities in the world was devastated on August 4th by a blast that killed 171 people, injured thousands and displaced more than 300,000 people from their homes, all amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a failing economy and staggering inflation and unemployment. These are truly heartbreaking conditions that have created a humanitarian catastrophe and relentless human suffering and despair.
Yet, heroes rise up again, as they have for decades in Lebanon. Adding to the trauma, residents of Beirut and frontline workers have taken on much of the cleanup work themselves, looking for the missing under the rubble, bandaging their wounds and retrieving what’s left of their homes. Acts of beautiful humanity have emerged all over the city. As always, the proud Lebanese wanting to live in peace and dignity, have rolled up their sleeves to rebuild and dream of better days!
More than ever the people of Lebanon need your help!
We have chosen to support an amazing organization – Achrafieh2020 – which provides food and medical supplies to those most in need. This non-profit organization is non-affiliated, non-sectarian and non-political. It is run by Akram Nehme, an incredible man who works tirelessly with some 200 volunteers, supporting more than 1,100 families with essential food, medical supplies and more. His mission is not only to help people survive but also retain their dignity when they have lost so much.
I have known Akram since I was a child living in Beirut and he is truly a most caring and inspirational man. He was already doing so much to support those most in need prior to the explosion but now the situation is desperate. Every day, Achrafieh2020 delivers care boxes containing food, provisions, and personal hygiene products that provide a lifeline to families most in need. Each care box costs $32; while this is such a small amount, the reality is that he needs to raise more than $50,000 a month to support the increasing number of families in desperate need.
When my friend Nicki and I sat down to discuss what we could do to help, we knew instantly that we had to support Akram. We have spoken at length with him about his incredible work, a conversation that resulted in all three of us in tears due to the enormity and desperation of the situation. Yet there is hope – hope that our support can and will make a difference for our brothers and sisters in Beirut.
We are so grateful to know so many kind and generous people and we are humbled to reach out to you to support our appeal. All funds donated are tax deductible and will be distributed through St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral. To donate, please make your check to St. George Cathedral (7515 E. 13th St. Wichita KS 67206) marked “Heartbreak and Heroes” to ensure the safest transfer of donations to Achrafieh2020.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
